KU lost 1-4 in the 2023 regular season against Yonsei University at Mokdong Ice Rink at 2 p.m. on Aug. 8. KU was unable to overturn the score as Yonsei’s fierce offense and tenacious defense kept the game close.
Period 1: KU responds with a goal to keep the game close (1-1)
From the start of the game, Yonsei’s offense was fierce. At 1:29, Choi Won-ho (Chegyo 20) took a double-minor penalty, leaving KU shorthanded for four minutes. In the second minute, Lee Seung-jae (KU23) received a pass from Kim Si-hwan (KU22) and tried to shoot, but Ha Jung-ho (KU20) made the save. At 3:52, Gong Gong-chan (Yonsei 23) sent the puck from the right side of the blue line, but it went wide of the goal. At 4:09, after a scramble in front of the net, Lee Seung-jae (Yonsei 22) took advantage of the numerical advantage and fired a puck that rattled the net to give Yonsei the lead. At 5:51, Kim Bum-seok (Yonsei 23) broke through toward the goal, but Golli’s super save prevented a goal. At 6:58, Bae Sang-ho (Yonsei 20) made another breakthrough after receiving a pass from Nam Kiwoong (Yonsei 20), but the goal was not opened. At 11:22, in a chaotic situation in front of the goal, Heo Min-jun (C) pushed the puck in from the left side of the goal after receiving a pass from Choi Sung-soon (C). At 11:47, Kim Moo-sung (C) made a solo break toward the goal, but Yonsei’s defense prevented him from getting a shot off. The two schools continued to battle for possession of the puck, but chances did not come easily. At 17:42, Yoo Tae-woong (Yonsei 21) attempted a mid-range shot, but Golli blocked it with his leg pad. At 19:57, Choi Won-ho had a sharp shot that was saved.
◇Period 2: KU concedes a goal in a hard-fought game (score 1-2)
KU started the period with another 4-on-5 matchup as Jung Ho-hyun (Chekyo 20) was sent off for a cross-checking penalty at 1:05. At 2:03, Kim Si-hwan tried to slide the puck in from the left side of the net, but Golli crouched down to make the save. At 2:53, Yonsei’s two-man man penalty sent Kim Da-on (Yonsei 23) to the box, giving KU an immediate power play opportunity. At 4:15, Kwon Min-jae (KU) made a quick run and sent the puck flying over the top of the net, but KU was unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage. At 5:56, Heo Min-jun received a pass from Kim Sung-jae (Chegyo 20) and tried to shoot from the left side of the goal, but missed to the right side of the goal. At 8:01, Kwon Hyun-soo (CHEGA22) went behind the net and pushed the puck through the chaos in front of the goal, but it was blocked by Goli. At 8:17, Kwon Hyun-soo attempted another shot, but Golli blocked it with his chest pad.
KU gave up the lead again. At 8:37, Kim Hyun-seo took an interference penalty, leaving KU shorthanded. With KU outnumbered, Yonsei added another point at 10:31 when Kim Si-hwan scored from the left side of the goal after receiving passes from Jeon Hyuk-joon (Yonsei 21) and Lee Seung-jae. At 11:06, Heo Min-joon and Yoo Tae-woong were penalized simultaneously, resulting in a four-on-four match. At 11:55, Kim Sung-jae, who received a pass from Jung Ho-hyun, fired a puck from near the blue line that was sucked into Golli’s glove. At 12:22, Lee Seung-jae broke through from the left side of the net and shot the puck, but Golli made the save. At 13:43, Lee Yoon-seok (Chekyo 21) and Hwang Jae-woong (Yonsei 22) took simultaneous holding penalties, resulting in another 4-on-4 matchup. At 15:29, Lee Gong-chan went behind the net and shot the puck, but Ha Jeong-ho was solid in goal. At 16:28, Jeong Ho-hyun broke through on his own to the left side of the goal and had a chance, but it didn’t go in. At 18:03, Choi Won-ho took a cross-checking penalty and the period ended with KU facing a short-handed crisis.
Third period: KU crumbles against a higher wall (Score 1-4)
At 45 seconds of the third period, Park Sang-jin (C21) attempted a shot from near the goal, but Song Eun-seok (C21) made a full body save on the puck. At 1:27, Lee Moo-young (CK23) sent a puck from near the blue line, but it went wide of the goal. At 1:27, Park Sang-jin took a penalty, giving KU a power play. At 2:40, with a numerical advantage, Kim Sung-jae shot the puck from the point, but the goal was not opened. At 5:17, Kim Si-hwan took a tripping penalty, giving KU another power play opportunity. KU quickly exchanged passes to create a shooting opportunity, but Yonsei’s tenacious defense prevented them from capitalizing. At 8:27, Kwon Min-jae broke through on his own and knocked a shot from the left side of the goal, but it didn’t lead to a goal. 9:09 Kim Sung-ho (Chegyo 23) attempted a mid-range shot from near the blue line, but the goal was not opened. Yonsei took another step forward. At 10:56, Bae Sang-ho slid the puck into the open net for Yonsei’s third goal. At 13:07, Kwon Min-jae and Kim Yong-soo (Yonsei 22) took cross-checking penalties, resulting in a four-on-four matchup. At 13:41, Lee Yoon-seok broke through strongly and shot the puck, but Golli made the save. At 13:50, Bae Sang-ho made a solo breakaway toward the front of the net, but Golli made the save. At 16:15, Hwang Jae-woong was called for a clipping penalty, giving KU a power play. At 16:48, KU conceded its fourth goal as Shin Dong-hyun (Yonsei 21) took advantage of KU’s empty net and scored. At 17:28, Heo Min-jun was sent off for a penalty, causing a short-handed crisis, and Kim Sung-ho took a penalty with 50 seconds left in the game. KU conceded four goals to Yonsei on the day. The KU ice hockey team had prepared for this day and showed persistence by continuing to attack aggressively until the end, but Yonsei’s unwavering defense prevented them from capitalizing on their chances. KU’s next game is the 2023 regular season basketball game at 5 p.m. today at Goyang Indoor Gymnasium.
